I agree. A good swing will always produce a good release. Halfway down achieve a good shaft angle. At impact: back of lead hand square to the target with lead hand “knucks-down”. Left side pulling out of the way so that the right side can contribute. Trying to control/time the clubhead directly will only throw off your overall timing and body positions.
Great video. I had just started releasing the club today, and looked at vids to confirm what I’m doing.
The increase in power is definitely noticable, and the ball gets compressed every time. Some videos on youtube are saying “Don’t flip the wrists” – they should be more specific, as they could discourage people from properly releasing.
Nice…
Thanks, glad it helped.
…and good comment about not flipping vs. discouraging a release.
For a long time instructors taught students to have the feeling you were “sitting” on a bar stool. I always believed we should have been teaching people to feel as though you were “leaning” back on a stool. The last thing you would ever want to do is sit in golf. Sitting will cause the golf club to swing too level to the ground in the downswing, and you will have a tendency to hit the ground behind the golf ball. w w w (dot) golferbreak80 (dot) c0m
Great video on how to learn to release the club head. Looking at yourself swing in front of a mirror is easy and a very good idea.
This is my main problem.. I can get it worked out on the range but I revert back to holding on to long on the course.
When I used an interlocked grip I hit my irons straight as an arrow but I moved to an overlap grip due to pain in my pinky finger and ever since have had a late club release.
Never could hit my driver straight heheh.
The Number one reason if you are slicing or hooking the ball too much – chances are you are swaying your hips too much, meaning your body weight is shifting outside your right foot if you are a right handed golfer.
Try to load properly against your right leg engaging your large large muscles in your back to make the coil. This will get your club on the correct plane and will give you maximum power and consistency. Learn to pivot properly and it will greatly improve your game.
@ILoveChappy – Some of the best laggers still have 90 degrees between the club and their lead forearm as the hands are approaching the rear leg on the downswing from a face-on viewpoint…but still get full extension by the time they hit the ball or very shortly after the strike. Working to achieve that would give you a good amount of pop on the ball.
@jaacobbowden okay thanks man. I never really focused on the release of my club in the past, but i think ill be able to make my swing a lot more consistent just practicing the release.
Hey im looking for some good advice to fix my swing from people who know what there talking about. Just type in Clint Kuglar 3 wood in the search bar. Thank you!
1st… If yours grip is too tight. the release won’t happen. Your grip needs to be no firmer than what is allowed to maintain a relaxed feel. Maybe a 4 in a 1-10 scale. You have to experiment. One tip I like was to grip the club like you are holding a bird securely without squeezing it. Your grip will tighten slightly naturally as you take it back.. Once the wrist is cocked try hitting the ball hard as if it were a nail and the club a hammer. The release should happen naturally..
Certainly seem to be one of my problems. Especially with the driver. Is this what is meant by getting the club “stuck behind you”?
Great video. Need to work on my swing for sure. Since a shoulder injury it’s not the same anymore.
@OUfan49 You may want to try (experiment) with imagining this: flinging an apple off the end of your shaft – making sure you release the club head freely around your body. Or imagine a fishing rod: feel the load of weight/power in your wrists as it gets below yoiur waist “cast” the club head throught the ball hard!! (feeling like your head is actually going backwards as clubead goes away from you through impact.)
